The Dutch East India Company was the first multinational corporation and the first to issue stock. Controlled the spice islands of Indonesia for 350 years. New Amsterdam became New York when captured by the English. The Dutch traded Manhattan for Suriname. Indonesia gained independence in 1949 after a struggle.
