Empire of Brazil
About Empire of Brazil
Formed when Dom Pedro, son of the Portuguese king, declared Brazilian independence in 1822. Under his son Pedro II, Brazil enjoyed decades of relative stability and parliamentary government. It fought the Paraguayan War against Paraguay from 1864 to 1870. Slavery was abolished in 1888, and a military coup proclaimed a republic the next year.
