About Ethiopian Empire
Also known as Abyssinia, ruled by the Solomonic dynasty, which claimed descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Emperor Menelik II defeated Italy at Adwa in 1896, preserving independence. Apart from the Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941, it avoided colonization. A Marxist military junta deposed Haile Selassie in 1974.
