About First Mexican Empire
The first independent Mexican state after the end of Spanish rule. Agustin de Iturbide, who had negotiated independence, was crowned Emperor Agustin I. Central America briefly joined the empire. Opposition from republicans led by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna forced his abdication in 1823, and Mexico became a republic.
