Kanem-Bornu Empire
About Kanem-Bornu Empire
A long lived empire around Lake Chad that controlled trans-Saharan trade routes. Its Sayfawa rulers converted to Islam in the 11th century. Pressure from rivals forced the court to move from Kanem to Bornu in the late 14th century. Idris Alooma used firearms and Ottoman connections in the 16th century. It was conquered by Rabih az-Zubayr in 1893.
