About Kievan Rus
A federation of East Slavic principalities ruled by the Rurikid dynasty from Kyiv. Vladimir the Great adopted Orthodox Christianity from Byzantium in 988. Yaroslav the Wise issued the first law code, the Russkaya Pravda. Kievan Rus is claimed as a cultural ancestor by Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. The Mongols sacked Kyiv in 1240.
