About Kingdom of Kongo
A major African kingdom that voluntarily converted to Catholicism. Kings corresponded with the Pope as equals. Portuguese slave trade undermined the kingdom over centuries. Queen Nzinga fought the Portuguese for 30 years. The Battle of Mbwila in 1665 decimated the ruling class. Formally ended when absorbed by Portugal.
