About Liao Dynasty
An empire founded by the Khitan people that ruled northern China, Mongolia, and Manchuria. It forced the Song dynasty to pay annual tribute under the Treaty of Chanyuan in 1005. The Khitan governed through a dual system for nomads and settled Chinese. The Jurchen destroyed it, and remnants founded the Western Liao in Central Asia.
