About Xiongnu
A nomadic confederation of the eastern steppe that became the first great rival of imperial China. Modu Chanyu united the tribes and forced the early Han dynasty to pay tribute and offer princesses in marriage. The Great Wall was extended partly to keep them out. Emperor Wu of Han waged long wars against them.
