Built Tenochtitlan on an island in a lake, population 200,000, larger than any European city. Practiced human sacrifice on a massive scale, possibly thousands per year. The conquistadors allied with rival peoples who hated Aztec rule. Smallpox killed up to 90% of the population. Hernan Cortes conquered it with only 500 men and thousands of indigenous allies.
