About Maratha Empire
Founded by Shivaji, who guerrilla-warfared against Mughal power. At its peak, controlled most of the Indian subcontinent. The third Battle of Panipat in 1761 was a devastating defeat from which it never fully recovered. The British East India Company eventually defeated the Marathas. Shivaji remains a hero in Maharashtra.
